At Literacy Volunteers of America, Essex & Passaic Counties, we have a long list of U.S. citizens and immigrants, among them refugees and asylum seekers, waiting for help in learning to speak, understand, read, and write in English. We need volunteers to teach them. Here's how you can help: Learn to teach ESOL and Basic Literacy with LVA. After training, you will be matched with a small group of students (three to five) and tutor them for at least two hours each week via distance learning.

Become a volunteer literacy tutor by registering for our 10-hour (five days of two hours each) virtual tutor training course. This opportunity is only for local residents of Essex and Passaic Counties or others than can meet in-person in these counties.

This is a great opportunity to get involved and help your community!

Volunteer: Scholastic Book Fair Volunteers- Help Us Share The Magic of Reading

This spring, United Way of Passaic County is bringing the joy of reading directly to students through special sponsored Scholastic Book Fairs—and we invite you to be part of this meaningful experience.

School 15, Paterson (98 Oak St) — April 21–24

School 17, Clifton (361 Lexington Ave) — May 18–22

For many of the children we serve—especially those in ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) families—purchasing books is often a luxury. These book fairs create a truly special moment where every child can choose books of their own to take home, building not only literacy, but confidence, excitement, and a sense of ownership.

We are seeking volunteers to serve in a variety of roles, including:

✨ Assistant Shoppers – Help students find their “just right” books

✨ Check-Out Support – Keep the experience smooth and organized

✨ Greeters – Welcome students and create a warm, joyful environment

Whether you join us for a few hours or multiple days, your time will help create a memorable experience—placing books, joy, and opportunity into the hands of children across our community.

Sign up below to be part of this special experience. Please keep an eye out for an email from info@unitedwaypassaic.org for confirmation on your days and times.

Volunteer: ¿Hablas español? BILINGUAL volunteers needed to advocate for children in foster care

In approximately 15 hours per month, you can make a difference in a child's life as a volunteer BILINGUAL advocate. More than fifty percent of children in the Passaic and Union County foster care system identify as Latinx. Unfortunately, there is a serious shortage of Bilingual English/Spanish volunteers to advocate for their rights.

When a child enters foster care, he or she is assigned a dedicated, trained Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) volunteer from the CASA of Passaic and Union County Program. The child’s advocate ensures that their individual needs remain a priority while they move through the child welfare system and the family court. CASAs work one-on-one with the abused or neglected child, gathering information from the family, caretakers, teachers, doctors, and caseworkers in order to make informed recommendations to the family court about the child’s future. No experience or formal education is needed!

Join CASA of Passaic and Union as a BILINGUAL advocate, and change a child's life! Training begins in October, so contact Sara Torres at sara@casapassaicunion.org ASAP to get started or visit our website to register for an information session as your first step!

Volunteer: Advocate for a Child or Youth in Passaic County's Foster Care System

Children in foster care need compassionate, dedicated community members to look out for their best interests and speak up when needed.
